Tools

The quality of stamping, forming and cutting tools can be improved considerably by finishing the workpieces in a drag finishing machine from the OTEC DF Tools series. Defined edge rounding dramatically increases the life of cutting tools such as carbide drills, thread taps, inserts and small broaches, as a rule by a factor of three. This process can also debur tools such as taps and polish carbide tools. The OTEC process not only rounds the edges but also smooths the surfaces considerably. This significantly reduces chipping.

What is more, this process is - unlike other processes - absolutely reliable and is used, for example, for finishing parts for Formula 1 racing cars (e.g. smoothing and polishing of parts for engines and gearboxes).

PVD and DLC coated workpieces are rougher after coating, partly as a result of the formation of droplets. A short finishing process can can both rectifiy this and polish the tool. This reduces friction considerably, whilst also significantly reducing wear.

With forming tools, Ra values of up to 0.02 µm can be achieved and the rate of removal greatly increased.

Polishing significantly improves the appearance of tool chucks. Furthermore, the special polishing process used in the drag finishing machines largely prevents corrosion at the tool holder, so that the holders give months of service without the need for further anti-corrosion treatment. Further applications include drills, threaded plates, gear shaper cutters, reamers, milling heads, deep-rolling rollers, roller tools, moulding dies, knurling tools, calibration mandrels and bending tools.
