From Sensor to Process Automation

Bruker Alicona and OTEC Präzisionsfinish showcase metrology and surface finishing directly in production at GrindingHub

Bruker Alicona, in collaboration with OTEC Präzisionsfinish, will demonstrate how optical 3D metrology can be seamlessly integrated into industrial manufacturing processes at GrindingHub 2026 in Stuttgart. In Hall 7 | Booth D17, OTEC’s proven Streamfinish system will present a fully automated process for selective and precise cutting edge preparation, featuring an integrated Bruker Alicona sensor that enables a closed-loop system. The exhibition will highlight a clear trend in manufacturing: metrology is increasingly moving from the measurement lab directly into production.

Automated Cutting Edge Preparation with Integrated 3D Metrology

A standout feature at the booth is OTEC’s automated Streamfinish machine, equipped with Bruker Alicona’s SensorX. The showcased system demonstrates an automated mass finishing process for selective cutting edge preparation. The Stream Finishing Technology achieves process times of under one minute. A rotary drive allows targeted processing of individual edges and surfaces, particularly for asymmetrical tools. Processes are tailored to customer requirements to ensure optimal results. OTEC has reimagined and refined its Stream Finishing Series for this purpose.

The process is fully automated

First, workpieces are robotically guided into the most compact container of the OTEC Stream Finishing Series and precisely positioned. Next, the defined edge processing takes place, allowing for targeted edge rounding between 5–100 μm, depending on customer needs. This controlled edge preparation improves chip formation, tool life, and process stability in machining.

In the next step, optical metrology comes into play:

The integrated SensorX performs non-contact 3D measurements of the cutting edge, capturing precise parameters such as edge rounding, geometry, and surface structure. The measurement data is then fed directly back into the process, creating a closed-loop system that connects machining and quality control, automatically detecting and compensating for deviations. Precision is critical for cutting edge rounding in the range of 5–100 μm, as it directly impacts tool performance and longevity. By combining automated machining with integrated optical metrology, 100% inspection is possible. OTEC’s modular, expandable solution marks a significant step toward self-optimizing machines.

SensorX: OEM Metrology for Machine Integration

With SensorX, Bruker Alicona has developed a sensor specifically designed for integration into machines and automated production systems. The compact sensor unit is based on the proven Advanced Focus-Variation technology, enabling high-resolution optical 3D measurements directly within the machine. This allows machine manufacturers to integrate metrology directly into their systems—such as grinding machines, automation cells, robotics systems, or production lines—enabling new forms of inline quality control and process regulation.

Key technical features include:

  • Up to 4.6 million measurement points per scan
  • Measurement of steep geometries up to 87°
  • Non-contact measurement on reflective surfaces
  • Measurements independent of part orientation
  • Complete digital documentation of measurement data

This makes metrology an integral part of modern closed-loop manufacturing processes.
